What are HTS codes, and how do I know if I’m using the correct one?

Updated this week

HTS codes (Harmonized Tariff Schedule codes) are numerical classifications used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)

HTS cods categorize imported goods and determine applicable tariff and duty rates. Using the correct HTS code is essential—it directly affects how much you’ll pay in tariffs, and errors can result in delays, fines, or overpayment.

Here’s how to find the correct code for your product:

  • Use the official HTS Search Tool to search by keyword or product type

  • Review the full product description and cross-check any similar listings

  • When in doubt, consult a licensed customs broker to verify the most accurate and defensible classification

Tip: The more complex your product, the more important it is to get this right. If you're using a manufacturer’s code, double-check that it still applies once the product is packaged or modified for your brand.
